How to Register a POS Business in Nigeria
CAC registration is no longer optional for POS agents. Here is what is required, which structure to pick, and how to get it done without an agent.
About FastCAC: FastCAC isn't a CAC agent. It's a registration platform built by DigitalAbode (RC 8561321), a registered Nigerian technology company, that files your application directly with CAC.

POS stands are everywhere in Nigeria: at bus stops, inside shops, at market gates. For years most of them ran informally. That has changed. The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) now expect every POS agent to be a registered business, and the fintechs that issue the terminals have been asking their agents to prove it.
This guide explains why the rule exists, what kind of registration makes sense for a POS operator, what your provider is likely to ask for, and how to register yourself online. One thing up front: FastCAC is a registration platform, not a CAC agent and not affiliated with CAC or any POS provider. We help you file correctly; we do not issue terminals or agent approvals.
1. Why POS Agents Must Register Now
The push started in 2024. After a CBN directive for POS agents to register their businesses, the CAC set a deadline of 7 July 2024for agents working with fintechs such as OPay, Palmpay and Moniepoint, and opened a bulk-registration centre so providers could submit their agents in batches. The CAC cited Section 863(1) of the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) 2020 and the CBN's agent banking guidelines as the legal basis.
On 7 July 2024 the CAC extended the deadline by 60 days to 5 September 2024, mainly for operators in remote areas, and warned that agents who did not register risked losing their businesses and prosecution. Enforcement has continued since. In late 2025 the CAC was reported as saying that from 1 January 2026 no POS operator would be permitted to operate without proper registration, with unregistered terminals liable to be seized and providers that keep enabling them facing sanctions.
The CBN's 2025 agent banking rules
On 6 October 2025 the CBN issued new Guidelines for the Operations of Agent Banking in Nigeria. As announced, they cap a POS agent at ₦1.2 million in cash-out per day, require agent devices to be geo-fenced to the agent's registered business location, require all agent transactions to run through a dedicated account or wallet with the provider, and say an agent can work with only one principal (one provider or super-agent network) at a time. The location and exclusivity rules were set to take effect from 1 April 2026.
The practical effect: your provider has to know exactly who you are and where you operate. A CAC registration with a correct address is the cleanest way to give them that.
Rules and enforcement dates in this sector move quickly. Always confirm current requirements with your POS provider before you rely on any deadline.
2. Business Name or Ltd?
The CAC requirement is to register the business. It does not force every agent into a limited company. For most POS operators the choice looks like this:
Business Name
Best for one person running one or a few stands. Cheaper to register, lighter annual filing, and the structure most providers accept for individual agents. You and the business are legally the same person, so you are personally responsible for its debts.
Limited Company (Ltd)
Better if you run several outlets, have partners or investors, employ attendants across locations, or want to become an aggregator. A company is a separate legal person, can own assets and sign contracts in its own name, and looks more serious to banks and partners.
Note that a super agent (an entity that manages a network of other agents) is a different thing entirely: it is an incorporated company that needs its own CBN licence. A CAC registration alone does not make you one. For a full side-by-side comparison, read Business Name vs Limited Company. For the official fees for each, see our CAC registration cost guide.
3. What Your POS Provider Asks For
Each fintech, bank or super-agent sets its own onboarding checklist, and they change them from time to time. In general, expect to be asked for some or all of the following:
- CAC certificate (and sometimes the status report) showing your business name or company.
- BVN and NIN of the owner, matching the name on the registration.
- Valid government ID such as an NIN slip, voter's card, driver's licence or passport.
- Business address and sometimes photos or a visit to confirm the location of your stand or shop.
- Background checks: the 2025 CBN guidelines require providers to check an agent's credit history, criminal record, source of funds and business address before appointing them. Some providers ask for a police report or clearance as part of this.
- Passport photograph and contact details.
Some providers have run compliance drives offering free or subsidised CAC registration for their agents. If yours offers that, it may be worth using. If you would rather control your own registration and get your certificate directly, you can register yourself and then upload the documents to your provider's app.
4. Describing Your Line of Business
The nature of business you declare matters. It is what your provider sees when it checks that you are registered for agency banking and not just as, say, a provision store.
- Describe the activity plainly, for example "POS agency banking services: cash deposit, cash withdrawal, transfers and bill payments".
- If you also sell airtime, data or recharge cards, or run a shop at the same location, include those activities too.
- Avoid wording that suggests you are a bank, microfinance bank or lender. Agents act for a licensed institution; they do not take deposits on their own account.
- Pick the closest business category the CAC portal offers and keep the description consistent with what you tell your provider.
On names: avoid restricted words like "Bank" or "Finance", and do not use your provider's brand in your business name. Run your idea through the free CAC name checker first, or get ideas from the business name generator.
5. NIN, BVN and Your Address
Most rejected or delayed POS registrations come down to mismatched details. Before you file:
- ✓Match your names exactly.
Use your name as it appears on your NIN. If your BVN record spells it differently, fix that with your bank first, because your provider will compare all three.
- ✓Use the address where you actually operate.
Under the 2025 CBN rules, agent devices are tied to a registered location. A home address in another area, or a vague description, can cause problems when your provider sets up geo-fencing. Give the street, landmark, LGA and state of your stand or shop.
- ✓Plan for moves.
If you relocate, your provider has to approve the new location. Update your provider and, where needed, your CAC address so your records stay consistent.
For the full document list, see CAC registration requirements.
6. Step-by-Step Registration
- Check your name. Pick two or three options and confirm they are available.
- Choose your structure. Business name for most single operators; Ltd if you are building a multi-outlet business with partners.
- Prepare your details. Your NIN slip (keep the paper slip handy), a clear passport photo, your signature, phone number, email and operating address.
- Describe the business. State agency banking / POS services clearly, plus any other trade at the same spot.
- Submit and pay the official fee. Then wait for the CAC to review and approve.
- Download your certificate and upload it to your POS provider's agent app or give it to your aggregator.
Register your business name without an agent
Business name registration is live on FastCAC now; limited company registration is coming soon. FastCAC checks your details against the CAC rules before you submit, so mismatched names or a weak business description get caught early, then tracks your application until your certificate arrives.
Start Registration7. Tax and After Registration
Under the 2025 tax reforms, the old TIN is being replaced by a unified Tax ID managed by the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS, formerly FIRS): your NIN for you as an individual, and your CAC number for a registered business. See how to get your Tax ID after CAC registration. Having one does not mean a big tax bill: for a business name, profit is taxed as the owner's personal income, and what counts is your actual earnings (commissions and charges minus costs), not the cash that passes through your terminal.
- Keep records. Your provider's app already logs transactions and commissions. Export statements monthly and keep receipts for rent, airtime and other costs.
- Separate your money. The 2025 rules route agent transactions through a dedicated account or wallet. Keep personal spending out of it.
- Stay compliant. Business names file an annual return with the CAC every year. Missing it leads to penalties and can make your registration look inactive to your provider.

POS Registration FAQs
Do I really need CAC registration to run a POS business?
Yes. Since 2024 the CAC, backed by the CBN, has required POS agents to register their businesses, and POS providers have been asking their agents for CAC documents as part of agent onboarding and compliance checks. Running a terminal without registration puts your terminal and your income at risk.
Should a POS agent register a business name or a limited company?
Most individual POS agents with one or two outlets register a business name. It is cheaper, simpler to keep up, and is what most providers accept for agents. A limited company makes more sense if you are running several outlets with partners, managing other agents, or planning to grow into something bigger.
I already have a registered business for my shop. Do I need a new one for POS?
Not always, but check. If your existing registration does not cover agency banking or POS services, your provider may ask you to update it or register the POS business separately. Ask your provider exactly what they will accept before paying for a new registration.
Can I register a POS business without an agent?
Yes. You can register a business name online yourself. FastCAC is a registration platform, not a CAC agent: business name registration is live now (limited company registration is coming soon), and it checks your details before submission and tracks your application until the certificate is issued.
What name should I use for my POS business?
Use a name that is unique and does not imply you are a bank. Avoid words like "Bank", "Microfinance" or "Finance" that suggest a licensed financial institution, and do not use your provider's brand name. Check availability first with a free name search.
Will registering with CAC make me pay more tax?
Registration does not create a new tax by itself, but it does make your business visible to the tax authority. Income from a business name is taxed as the owner's personal income. Keep simple records of commissions and charges so you can show what you actually earn.
