How to Get Your TIN After CAC Registration (2026)

Your tax number now comes with your CAC registration. Here is where to find it, how to check it, and what changed in 2026.

About FastCAC: FastCAC isn't a CAC agent. It's a registration platform built by DigitalAbode (RC 8561321), a registered Nigerian technology company, that files your application directly with CAC.

How to Get Your TIN After CAC Registration (2026)

The first thing a bank asks for after your CAC certificate is usually your Tax Identification Number (TIN). The good news: you probably already have one. CAC and the tax authority are integrated, so a tax number is generated when your business is registered, free of charge.

What changed is the name and the system behind it. Nigeria's 2025 tax reform laws took effect on 1 January 2026. The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) became the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), the Joint Tax Board became the Joint Revenue Board (JRB), and the separate TINs those bodies and state tax offices used to issue are being replaced by a single Tax ID. This guide covers where to find yours, how to check it, and what to do if it's missing.

1. TIN vs the New Tax ID

The Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025 brings every taxpayer under one identifier, the Tax ID:

  • Individuals use their National Identification Number (NIN).
  • Registered businesses use their CAC registration number to retrieve their Tax ID.
  • Existing TINs still work. Businesses that already had a TIN have been told they don't need to register again.

In practice, "TIN" and "Tax ID" are used interchangeably by banks and clients in 2026. If a form asks for your TIN, give the number on your certificate or the Tax ID the portal shows for your business.

2. Where to Find Your TIN

Check these places, in this order:

Your CAC certificate

CAC says the tax number is generated electronically and endorsed on the certificate when a business registers through its portal. On new certificates it's printed near the bottom. Our CAC certificate guide shows where each detail sits.

Your status report and registration documents

Look through the documents that came with your certificate. If you registered with FastCAC, they're on the Documents page of your account.

The Tax ID portal

If neither document shows it, look it up with your CAC number (next section).

3. How to Look Up Your Tax ID

The JRB and NRS launched a Tax ID portal on 1 January 2026. It replaces the older JTB TIN lookup that most guides still point to.

1

Open the portal

Go to taxid.jrb.gov.ng (also available at taxid.nrs.gov.ng). Type the address yourself rather than clicking links in messages.

2

Choose the Corporate tab

Use this for a business name or a company. The Individual tab is for people, using their NIN.

3

Pick your organisation type

Select the type that matches your registration.

4

Enter your CAC registration number

Your BN or RC number exactly as it appears on your certificate.

5

Note the Tax ID shown

Save it with your CAC documents. Banks and large clients will ask for it.

Ignore anyone asking you to pay for a TIN

CAC has warned directors of new companies about emails asking them to pay for a TIN. The tax number that comes with registration is free, and so is retrieving your Tax ID.

4. If Your TIN Is Missing

Older registrations, especially business names registered before the CAC tax integration, may not have a tax number on the certificate. Try the Tax ID portal first. If it can't find your business, or the details it shows are wrong (old name, wrong address), contact the nearest NRS tax office with your CAC certificate, your status report and the owner's or directors' IDs. They can help find, create or correct the record.

Don't register a second time to get a new number. One business should have one tax record.

5. Business Name vs Company

Business Name (BN)

Not a separate taxpayer. Profit is the owner's personal income, taxed by the state tax office where the owner lives. The owner's personal Tax ID is their NIN. The business name's own number is still useful for the bank account and invoices.

Limited Company (Ltd)

A separate taxpayer. The company files its own company income tax returns with NRS, using the Tax ID linked to its RC number, whether or not it owes any tax.

6. 2026 Tax Changes for Small Businesses

Four tax laws were signed on 26 June 2025 and took effect on 1 January 2026: the Nigeria Tax Act, the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act and the Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Act. The parts most new businesses will notice:

  • A 0% rate for small companies. Small companies pay no company income tax, capital gains tax or development levy. The gazetted Nigeria Tax Act defines a small company as one with gross turnover of ₦50 million or less and fixed assets of no more than ₦250 million. Earlier drafts used ₦100 million, and the chair of the presidential tax reform committee has said ₦100 million was intended. Confirm which figure applies before you rely on it.
  • Professional services are excluded.Firms providing professional services don't get the small-company rate, whatever their size.
  • Zero tax still means filing. The exemption is about the rate, not about staying invisible. Keep records and file your returns every year.
  • Taxable persons need a Tax ID for banking. The administration act requires banks to ask anyone earning business income for a Tax ID. Government has clarified this does not mean automatic deductions from your account.

Tax rules have changed a lot in a short time. Treat this as a starting point, and speak to an accountant about your own numbers.

7. VAT Registration Basics

VAT stays at 7.5% under the new laws. Small businesses below the turnover threshold don't have to charge VAT. Reports disagree on whether that threshold is ₦50 million or ₦100 million in the gazetted text, so check with NRS or an accountant if you're close to either figure.

If you're above the threshold, register for VAT with NRS using your Tax ID, add VAT to your invoices and file VAT returns on time. You can also register voluntarily, which some businesses do so they can deal with larger clients who expect VAT invoices. Our invoice generator guide covers what a proper invoice should show.

What to Do Next

With your Tax ID in hand, the next steps are a business bank account, your CAC annual returns each year, and the rest of the post-registration checklist. Haven't registered yet? FastCAC lets you register a business name online yourself: we check your details before CAC does and track your application until your certificate arrives. TIN FAQs

Do I need to apply for a TIN separately after CAC registration?

Usually not. CAC and the tax authority are integrated, so a tax number is generated when CAC registers your business, at no extra cost. Since January 2026 the old TIN is being replaced by a single Tax ID, and for a registered business that Tax ID is tied to its CAC registration number.

Is the TIN the same as the new Tax ID?

The Tax ID is the 2026 replacement for the separate TINs that FIRS, the Joint Tax Board and state tax offices used to issue. Individuals use their NIN, and registered businesses use their CAC registration number to retrieve theirs. Businesses that already had a TIN have been told they don't need to re-register.

Where can I check my business's Tax ID?

On the Tax ID portal run by the Joint Revenue Board and the Nigeria Revenue Service, at taxid.jrb.gov.ng (also reachable at taxid.nrs.gov.ng). Choose the Corporate tab, pick your organisation type and enter your CAC registration number.

Does a business name have its own TIN?

A business name gets a CAC number, and banks may ask for a tax number for the business account. But a business name is not a separate taxpayer: its profit is taxed as the owner's personal income, and the owner's personal Tax ID is their NIN.

Does having a TIN mean I have to pay tax?

No. A Tax ID is an identifier, not a bill. Whether you owe tax depends on your income and business type. Many small businesses pay little or no income tax under the 2025 tax laws, but they are still expected to file.

Do I need to register for VAT?

Only if your business is above the small-business threshold, or you choose to register voluntarily. Businesses above it register with the Nigeria Revenue Service, charge VAT at 7.5% and file VAT returns. Reports differ on the exact threshold, so check with NRS or an accountant.
